This story comes to us from Adrian Giurgiu’s shelter in Pattaya, Thailand. Adrian is one of the most compassionate humans we’ve ever had the privilege of knowing
& he has kindly taken Jasmine into his shelter & more importantly into his heart.
Adrian tells us the story of Jasmine…
Jasmine’s journey with us began in one of the most heartbreaking ways imaginable.
After the Songkran Festival, a man brought her to our sanctuary — not with the intention of helping her, but to leave her behind. He said she had been hit by a car and was now paralyzed.
Her legs were stiff and lifeless, and he no longer wanted the burden of caring for her. He told us plainly: if we didn’t take her, he would euthanize her.
We were already overwhelmed, with far too many animals under our care and not enough resources.
But how could we turn our backs on Jasmine? Looking into her eyes, we saw a soul still full of life — a dog who had suffered but had not given up.
We couldn’t let her die just because she was inconvenient.
So Jasmine came to live with us.
At first, it was a challenge. She couldn’t move her back legs, and they dragged behind her. This caused painful open sores and deep wounds.
We tried our best to protect her skin with padding, bandages, and soft surfaces, but the wounds kept reopening. Worse, the dead weight of her stiff, lifeless legs was causing her
immense discomfort and preventing her from adapting to a better life.
We consulted with several vets and discussed every option. Finally, after careful consideration and seeing her quality of life deteriorating, the decision was made:
Jasmine would undergo a life-changing surgery to amputate her non-functional back legs.
It was not a decision made lightly. But it was the right one. Jasmine’s surgery went well, and soon after, we noticed a remarkable transformation. She no longer had to drag around the heavy, damaged limbs. The painful sores began to heal. Her energy improved. She became lighter, freer, and visibly more content.
Every day since her amputation, Jasmine has grown stronger. Her spirit is radiant. She moves around better, she interacts more, and most importantly — she’s pain-free.
Her courage is inspiring. What was once a discarded life — a dog someone was ready to give up on — is now a beautiful, determined soul with a future.
