“This new boy arrived yesterday. After over 5 years and 150+ dogs from Cyprus, this poor boy is the worst case I have seen.
It took a fellow rescuer over 2 months to catch him with a trap and yesterday it was finally successful. His medical condition is dire.
He is positive for Ehrlichia, Anaplasmosis, Leishmania and worst, the snap test for Heartworm came out also positive. It is very rare in Cyprus and if in 3rd stage, almost always lethal.
We will get it confirmed early next week by lab tests, hoping it was a false negative.
His skin is in awful condition. Full of old open sores which have caused the dead skin to form big crusty lumps, almost like warts or scales on it. It is bone dry and tears like paper,
making him a walking smorgasbord for flies and open invitation for bacteria and infections.
He can absolutely not be outside due to this, but that’s where he was for who knows how many months or even years.
He weighs just 12kg when he should be twice that. The protruding bones have cut his skin open as he has had to lie on hard surfaces.
His eyes barely open due to all the crusty skin and he struggles to see in the dark. His blood values are one step away from requiring an emergency blood transfusion
and his liver and kidney values are very poor.
You can only imagine what his life has been like. Pain and suffering day in day out with no hope of a better future. I am feeding him several small, but tasty meals
which he eats like he’s never seen food before. He has a soft and comfy spot to sleep in an open crate which he loves and even knows how to find his way outside for toilet duties.
All my other rescued dogs clearly understand he needs help and have accepted him 100%. He is terrified of people, but has now allowed me to pet him
at the only spot where he still has normal, soft skin. Under his chin. He looks at me baffled, as if to ask what is this strange, gentle thing you are doing to me? 💔
He has clearly received nothing but abuse and pain from people, but despite all his suffering, there is a glimmer of hope in his murky eyes.
Hope that life may yet bring him joy and happiness. His chances of survival, if heartworm is confirmed, are poor, but even in the worst case scenario he will at the very least
finally know his life matters. Know what love is. For now he is just sleeping, bar for eating and going to toilet.
It is usual for dogs rescued from such circumstances to sleep for even up to 48hrs. Out in the world, though exhausted, they could not afford to sleep,
as they had to stay awake to find food and water. They know if they lay down, they may not be able to get up anymore.
So once they finally find a safe place with food and water, their relief is palpable as they can finally rest without worry. It is so rewarding to watch that happen,
knowing how long they have hoped to find a place like that”.
Jack needs some financial help to ensure William gets everything he needs to recover. Apart from medical treatment, there will be expensive kibble food to purchase
(due to his liver condition), moisturising creams & lotions to help ease his painful skin, vitamins & supplements etc and additional cleaning aids,
towels, blankets etc to keep William as comfortable as possible.
Jack says “As he has no fur I put a blanket on him overnight. He got up around 2am for toilet so I tucked him in again.
In the morning the blanket was exactly as I put it so he sleeps so deep and peacefully that he does not even move”.
We’d like to help Jack do his very best for William, please help us with a donation.
Thank you.
