Turunc Cat Shelter – Turkey…

Turunc is a small seaside village near Marmaris on the southern coast of Turkey. Like many other towns it has a feral img_6558cat problem which “Turunç Cats Protection and Rescue Group” are working to control.

We operate trap-neuter-return program (TNR) which is the most humane and effective method for improving the lives of street cats whilst also controlling the street cat population. The cats are humanely trapped, taken to a veterinary for spaying or neutering, medically treated; and in most cases they are returned to the outdoor locations where they were found, unless the location is unsafe or inappropriate.

dscf4436The cats are released where volunteers provide them with adequate food, water and they can monitor them for any signs of illness and injuries. We have also set up feeding stations around the village which enables us to monitor the health of the cats. Kittens and any cats who are unwell or have suffered a trauma are provided with veterinary care and are looked after at our rehabilitation shelter until they are healthy enough to be released. We also have a quarantine room where we treat sick cats and kittens, without infecting the cats in the main Rehabilitation Shelter. All new cats spend two weeks in quarantine to ensure they do not have any infectious diseases that they could be passed onto the other cats.

Mungo has been a free range diner at the cabin since he was abandoned by his human family two years ago. He is a happy friendly boy, and gets on fine with all the other cats. Unfortunately our problems started at the beginning of summer last year when we received a few complaints from our neighbours that a cat was killing young chickens. The description fitted Mungo. The following week Mungo got an upset tummy, so he stayed in the cabin for treatment. During that time we didn’t receive any complaints about chickens going missing. When Mungo was well we let him out again. But the next day a neighbour came to the cabin and told us that her only surviving chick was killed the day before by a cat and she pointed to Mungo.  Since then we have had to keep Mungo in the cabin to protect him, as we live in a village in Turkey with free range chickens running around. It really isn’t fair to keep Mungo in the cabin forever, but we can’t let him out for fear that he kills another chicken. Please can you save Mungo and give him as loving forever home. mungo
