MATHEW – A BADLY BADLY NEGLECTED AND INJURED DOG RESCUED TODAY…

This heart breaking case comes to us from Moe Diab in Beirut, Lebanon. Moe cares for many homeless, injured & sick animals and Mathew is his latest rescue.

Moe tells us the story of Mathew…

“My brother Rafik was outside our house this morning when he noticed a very distressed looking husky rooting through rubbish trying to find food. He approached the dog and noticed he had a very tight collar around his neck and the dog was clearly in pain.

We bundled the dog into my car to take him to the shelter where I had some tools for removing the collar. This dog absolutely stank-and this is a smell I recognise of rotting flesh which almost always indicates a dog has maggots.

The reality was much worse than we thought- this poor dog had a chain type collar that had literally embedded itself into the flesh of his neck. When we cut it off and parted the heavily matted fur around his neck we found the most awful stinking wounds around the full circumference of his neck. The smell was appalling .

He also had multiple wounds to his head and all around his neck wound and those on his head were huge maggots. He is also heavily infested with fleas. He had so many maggots and fleas on his body he could barely attempt to even bite us and he had the look of a defeated dog waiting to die.

We had to remove large areas of fur to be able to remove all the maggots and access the extensive wounds caused by the chain- which had been so long on his neck it had rusted away adding to the pain this poor dog was experiencing. He also can barely eat- so we need to have all his teeth checked as along with his neck wounds he may have a mouthful of rotting teeth .

Shockingly a man then appeared at the shelter gates saying we had taken his dog and he wanted the dog back! I explained to him he would not be taking the dog back-he was staying with me. This terrible owner couldn’t understand what the problem was and said he had kept the dog well- he had a kennel and food and water and that he walked the dog every two days. I cannot understand how a supposed owner could not have smelt the massive infection this dog has. He will not be getting his dog back ever!

Tomorrow we will need to take him to the vets for assessment and to check his teeth. he has wounds that will take months to heal and he will need regular pain relief, antibiotics and antiseptic to prevent this infection spreading further

He looks very sad for himself as we have had to remove so much hair but we need to know what other injuries he may have.”

K9Aid has set up a fundraiser to help Moe care for Mathew. Any donation however small will be so appreciated. We will update once treatment begins.

Thank you.
